  1. Monday – 9/10 • Warm-up- If you were a black person in the South during the late 1800’s what would you have done with your current situation? • Left for the North (Leaving family and friends) • Worked within the constraints of the law (Black Codes / Jim Crow) • Fought back against the injustices put upon your race. • WYMK – What supreme court case established Separate but Equal?

  2. Jim Crow Laws Laws that separated the races. Often gave whites much better facilities then the blacks in the South. This included Hotels, Restaurants, bathrooms and water fountains.

This insured Separate but EqualVoting Laws- Many laws were created to keep blacks from voting including: - literacy tests - residency requirements - poll taxes

  5. Booker T Washington • Washington made tremendous strides in developing African American’s in education. • In the “Atlanta Compromise” he urged blacks to postpone fight for civil rights and concentrate on educating themselves.

Booker T Washington • Excerpt from Atlanta Compromise speech: • “The wisest among my race understand that the agitation of questions of social equality is the extremest folly, and that the enjoyment of all the privileges that will come to us must be the result of severe and constant struggle rather than of artificial forcing…. It is important and right that all privileges of the law be ours, but it is vastly more important that we be prepared for the exercise of these privileges. The opportunity to earn a dollar in a factory just now is worth infinitely more than the opportunity to spend a dollar in an opera-house.”

  7. W.E.B. Dubois • Insisted on equal treatment and voting rights. • Was a leader in the beginning of the NAACP • Directly criticized Booker T Washington for being to cautious and conservative on Civil Rights.

  8. WEB Dubois • Excerpt from “The Souls of Black Folk” • “Negroes must insist continually, in season and out of season that voting is necessary and proper to proper manhood, that color discrimination is barbarism.”

  9. Compare and Contrast • Discuss the opposite views of Dubois and Washington. How were their approaches to Civil Rights different. Who do you agree with, explain your answer?

  19. Westward Expansion: Push/Pull Factors • Pacific Railways Act, 1862 – gave money to RR companies to build a trans-continental RR

  20. Government Incentives • Morrill Land-Grant Act 1862 • Homestead Act • Small Fee-160 acres of land • 21 Years old, head of household, citizenship • House, 12x14 Live in the house 6 months per year • Farm the land 5 years. • Creates more than 372,000 farms.

  22. Cattle Kingdoms on thePlains • 1850s – No fences on the Great Plains. • The land was open range. • Millions of cattle roamed the ranges. • 1850s – Texans herded up cattle for $$$. • 1860s – East wanted cattle for meat. • ??? How do you get cattle there ??? • RAILROADS solved the problem

The Growth of Railroads • In 1830s and 1840s – Railroads (RRs) were in the Northeast – more people lived there. • 1850s – US Govt. helped to build RRs; Congress gave land grants to RRs. • RRs developed Midwest by moving settlers, supplies, and farm products. • 1860s – RRs wanted to go across country.

Transcontinental Railroad • Pacific Railway Act – 1862 • US Govt. gave 10 sq. miles of land for every 1 mile of railroad track. • Central Pacific started in Sacramento, California, using Chinese immigrants. • Union Pacific started in Omaha, Nebraska, using Irish immigrants. • May 1869, in Utah, the Chinese workers met the Irish workers. RR complete!!!!!

  27. National Network of RRs • 1880 – RRs covered US • 1883 – American Railway Association divided the US into 4 time zones. • Each time zone had clocks set to the same time within the zone: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific

  28. Turner thesis • Frederick Jackson Turner – essay in 1893 describing the influence of western expansion on the American spirit.

Turner thesis • Turner argued that the frontier past explained the history of the United States. • He wrote "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," which he read in 1893 at Chicago, in the World's Columbian Exposition. • “The single most influential piece of writing in the history of American history.“
