  11. Atlanta, Georgia • Railroad hub in the south • Sherman wanted to disable the railroad / supply hub • Artillery pounded Atlanta for 40 days. • Conf. Gen. John Hood ordered his soldiers to burn and destroy everything so that there would be nothing left for Sherman’s army to use.

  12. Manassas, Virginia The first major land battle of The Civil War. Many Americans thought this would be a quick war. The Battle of Bull Run in Manassas, Virginia made Americans realize that this would be a long, bloody war. The Confederate forces won this battle.

  13. Appomattox Courthouse • The Battle of Appomattox Court House, fought on the morning of April 9, 1865, was the final engagement of Confederate States Army General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia before it surrendered to the Union Army under Lt. Gen.Ulysses S. Grant, and one of the last battles of the American Civil War.

  14. Northern Blockade • Union ships formed a blockade of Southern Ports vital in the cotton trade. • The Confederate economy depended on cotton trade with Europe. • Northern ships blocked this trade disrupted the cotton trade and the Southern economy.

  15. Sherman’s March to the Sea • 5 weeks Sherman marched his men from Atlanta to Savannah. • They looted and destroyed $100 million worth of property, crops, livestock and homes. • Along the “March” Andersonville Confederate Prison was discovered.
