Nebraska Information Technology Commission • Created in 1998 by LB924; currently codified as NRS 86-501 through 86-530. • The Nebraska Information Technology Commission (NITC) shall establish the vision and goals to guide the development and use of information technology infrastructure in Nebraska. • Composed of 9 Commissioners appointed by the Governor and approved by the Legislature; Lt. Governor Dave Heineman is the Chair.

  8. Network Needs • Aggregation of Bandwidth – Reduce cost • Ability to scale the size of the network • Quality of Service/Redundancy • Service Level Agreements • Ability to mix network designs • That meet State & University network needs • To consolidate network support functions

  9. Services • Internet 1 aggregation – primary service • Internet 2 – SEGP by July 2004, lots of interest • Transport network – Telehealth, homeland security, etc. • Video Services • Others (email, file servers, etc)

  10. Backbone Phases • 0 - Scottsbluff project • 1 - Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Kearney – Alltel is provider with MPLS network • 2 - North Platte, Norfolk, Alliance, Grand Island – Qwest is provider with ATM network

Next Steps • Identification of additional aggregation points • Encourage Customers to subscribe • ESUs 10,11,15,16,18 (maybe 13,14 and others) • Wayne State College • Interest from several community colleges • Creighton • Nebraska Hospital Association • Expect 100 meg of I1 service by July 2004 • But, ISPs are lowering prices to compete

  13. Problems • No money and State budget continues to fall • ISPs are becoming more competitive • Still no money • Most issues are not technical – policy/polictics
