  2. The 2013-2014 Remembrance Scholars

  3. The Scholarship Established by Syracuse University to honor and remember the 35 students studying abroad, who were among the 270 men, women, and children killed in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988.

  4. The Scholarship • Each year, 35 Remembrance Scholarships, each in the amount of $5,000, are awarded to undergraduate students on the basis of distinguished academic achievement, citizenship, and service to the community. • All selected remembrance Scholars are considered future leaders in their respective fields. • Each year, two students from Lockerbie, Scotland are given the opportunity to study at Syracuse University for one year.

  5. The Scholarship The Remembrance Scholarships are used as encouragement for students to exchange ideas and educate themselves, the campus, and the greater Syracuse community about this terrorist act and the far reaching effects of terrorism in general.

  6. The Application Process • Only students who will graduate from Syracuse University, December 2014 or May 2015 are eligible to apply. • Read the entire application. • Complete all parts of the application form. • Answer all the biographical questions listed.

  7. The Application Process • Request two letters of recommendation by completing the information on the request form and clicking “send”. You must complete separate forms for each recommender. Your recommender will get instructions via email on how to submit their recommendation. • One letter of recommendation must be from a faculty member who has taught, advised, mentored, or supervised you. • The second letter of recommendation may be from an individual who knows you in a professional capacity (employer or supervisor) or it may be from another academic.

  8. The Application Process • You must use a valid email address for each recommender for this to be successful. • When each of your recommenders completes their letter and submits it to the Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee, you will receive an email confirmation. • Transcripts • SU transcripts will be obtained by the Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee. • If you have transferred a total of 10 or more credits from a single institution, you must provide an official transcript from that institution. Transcripts should be in an envelope, sealed with a stamp or signature over the flap, and must be received by the application deadline at:  304 Steele Hall, Office of Undergraduate Studies Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY 13244

The Application Process Hints to help you complete this application: • Request letters of recommendation early and confirm with your recommenders that they have submitted their materials. • Proof read to ensure that all parts of the application are complete, accurate, and well written. • After you have completed the online application, click “submit”. • Your application will not be considered unless all sections, including the letters of recommendation, are completed and you successfully submit the application.

The Application Process Hints to help you complete this application: • Once you click “submit,” your application will be sent to the Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee and you CANNOT change it. • After your application is complete and has been submitted to the Remembrance Scholar Selection Committee, you will be able to view it (for a limited period). • You can work on any part(s) of the application and save your information as you go (by clicking “save”) and return to work on it later. You can continue to work on your saved application at any time until the deadline, January 21, 2013. • Application goes live on Nov. 15th, 2013 • Completed applications must be submitted online by midnight, Jan. 21st, 2014.

Remembrance Week • Each year, the Remembrance Scholars are responsible for organizing and executing a series of events geared toward remembering the victims of Pan Am Flight 103. • The 35 Remembrance and 2 Lockerbie Scholars are divided into committees responsible for planning the events of Remembrance Week.

  12. 2013 Remembrance Week • 2013 events included: • Candle Light Vigil • Panel discussions • Chair Installation • Table sittings • Poster Placement • Arts Tribute • Rose laying ceremony

Tips • Research, Research, Research • Remembrance.syr.edu • Bird Library Archives • Archives Website • Specifics about the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing and how the attack relates to current events • Be up-to-date with current events • Ask early • Talk to those writing your letters of recommendation early. • Type your essays in Word first • There is no spell check or grammar check on the application website.
