Introduction • TWU: +12,000 students, +90% female • Course redesign: pilot implementation intersect 2 courses • Funded by THECB • Developmental math: supplemental model • Computer literacy: replacement model • One faculty and one graduate TA per section • CS course structure: • One F2F session/week for brief lectures, demos, group activities, active learning activities, discussion … • One lab session/week: • Content posted online • Attendance optional for those with semester average over 70% • Class size: • Increased from ± 30 to 50+ • Limited by physical classroom sizes

  3. 4: Learning Materials - 1 • Mathematics component • MyMathLab • CS - more problematic: • No equivalent software • Blackboard used for course management: • Course information and communication • Course content • Group work, testing & grade book • Content: next slide • Implementation: • Currently pilot • Fall 2009 to full implementation

  4. 4: Learning Materials - 2 • CS – Learning Materials sources: • New text + publisher support materials: • Standard materials, such as: • PowerPoint lecture outlines • Test banks • Multimedia content: • Interactive Help Desk activities • Multimedia sound bytes • Companion website : • Resources • Practice tests and games • Podcasts (charge) • Development of custom content • Online through Blackboard • Web-based learning modules • Active learning and group activities, kinetic preferred

  5. 5: Student Reactions: Positive • Generally positive reactions • Liked active learning activities • Especially those with kinetic elements • Other elements: • Worksheets • Discussion • Research • Liked most of the group work, but must be very carefully calibrated • Liked the ability to schedule lab sessions at their convenience • Liked multiple attempts a chapter quizzes

  6. 5: Student Reactions: Problems • Email overload • Overload - even with FAQs posted online • Solution: automated email responses for common problems and warnings, i.e. disconnects, due dates, late warnings, etc. • Solution: email needs to be grouped by course • Solution: many of these addressed in newest Bb releases • Everything must count for a grade • Difficulty enforcing the mandatory lab session attendance for those below 70% average • Student complaint: too much work

  7. 6: Technology - Challenges • Classes size demands F2F sessions in classroom without computers • Puts a limit on group activities • Portable tablet laptops on cart in the works • Currently: some students bring their own laptops or go to nearby computer labs • Course management • Some issues with Blackboard course management sw • Many issues addressed in new releases

  8. 6: Technology - Support • Support for students: • Publisher text online companion site • Free peer tutoring support through MCSC • Web-based learning modules • Blackboard, Library and Office Lifelong Learning • Support for faculty and staff: • Course coordinator • Training before the start of semester • Required regularly scheduled meetings during semester • Blackboard and Office Lifelong Learning
