General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording Anthropometric Data

This module outlines the specific measurements to be taken for different age groups, from infants to adults, in anthropometric assessments. It provides guidelines on using the Anthropometry Data Capture Form or electronic app, recording measurements accurately, and capturing demographic information. Exercises are included to practice completing data collection forms for participants of varying ages.

  3. Learning outcomes By the end of this session, you will know: • What measurements to take in which participants • How to complete the Anthropometry Data Capture Form or use the electronic data capturing app Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  4. Which measurements to take in which participants

  5. Infants and toddlers 0-24 months • Weight: tared weighing with the parent/caregiver • Measure length lying down • From 3 months: MUAC  Use the colour-coded MUAC tape Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  6. Children 2-13 years • Weight – standing  For younger toddlers that are too restless to cooperate, tared weighing can be done • Height – standing • MUAC  Use the colour-coded MUAC tape up to 5 years of age Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  7. Secondary school learners 13-18 years • Weight – standing • Height – standing • MUAC • Waist circumference Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  8. Adults 18 years and older, including the elderly • Weight – standing • Height – standing • MUAC • Calf circumference • Waist circumference Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  9. Capturing Anthropometric Data Using the Anthropometry Data Capture Form or an electronic app

  10. Demographic information • Date • Birth date  Important for calculating age • Sex • This information is all crucial for interpreting the measurement Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  11. Measurements • The form/app will guide you on which measurements to take in which groups • Take each measurement twice – record in the spaces next to “1” and “2”  Recording the measured values: the boxes on the form/app will guide you on how many decimal places to record • Tick the appropriate boxes on the form or app • If you didn’t take a measurement, record the reason • Write down anything that could affect the measurement in the “comments” section  This will be discussed when we learn how to do the measurements Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  12. Exercise 1: completing the data collection form / app • Participant 123 • Male • Born 5 October 2020 • Weight: 10,20 kg ; 10,20 kg • Length: 76,3 cm; 75,9 cm • MUAC: 15,2 cm; 15,4 cm Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording

  13. Exercise 2: completing the data collection form / app • Participant 125 • Female • Born 17 November 1972 • Weight: 83,5 kg; 83,6 kg • Height: 161,5 cm; 161,1 cm • MUAC: 28,5 cm; 29,1 cm • Calf circumference: 39,6 cm; 40,2 cm • Waist circumference: 92,4 cm; 92,8 cm Hands-on Anthropometry – Module 5 – General Guidelines for Measuring and Recording
