  2. Design • Structural Design: Varying the yarns while weaving or knitting the fabric. • Applied designs: printed onto the surface of the fabric.

  3. Dye • Four main methods: • Stock Dyeing: Adding color to the fibers before spinning the fibers into yarn. (long lasting and uniform) • Solution Dyeing: Adding color to the manufactured fiber solutions before forcing them through the spinneret. (creates a consistent color) • Yarn Dyeing: Adding color to the yarn before making it into a fabric. (oldest method) • Piece Dyeing: Adding color to the fabric (Easiest and least expensive)

  4. Finishes • Improves appearance, texture, and performance of fabrics. • Applied only to fabrics not yarn or fiber

  5. Common Finishes • Antibacterial: reduces mold and bacteria growth • Antistatic: prevents build up of static • Bleaching: whitens natural fabric • Crease-resistant: prevents wrinkling • Durable Press: Prevents wrinkling • Flame-resistant/retardant: reduces chance of burning

  6. Common Finishes • Moth Resistant • Preshrinking • Sizing: adds extra body and weight to fabric through a solution of starch • Soil Release: easy stain removal • Stain Resistance: Makes fibers less absorbent • Waterproof: prevents water from soaking in the fabric
