  2. What kind of attitude do you have towards math?Do you….. Believe math skills are important job and life skills? See math as useful in everyday life? Dread doing things that involve math? (balancing your checkbook, figuring out how much new carpet you’ll need, leaving a tip?) How you answer these questions indicates how you may be influencing your child’s attitude towards math and how he/she approaches learning math!

  3. Parents can undermine their child’s ability and attitude towards math by saying things such as … “Math is hard!” I’m not surprise you don’t like math, I didn’t like math either when I was in school!” Although you can’t make your child like math, you can encourage her/him to do so!

  5. Problem solving with real-world math! • Model the importance of math in the real world and encourage your child to help when you: • 1. Balance your checkbook • 2. Pay bills • 3. Estimatethe cost of the groceries in your cart • 4. Determine how much food to buy or make for a party • 5. Double a recipe or cut a recipe in half • 6. Figure the cost of lunch at a restaurant • 7. Calculate the cost of school lunch for the week or month • 8. Determine how long your child will need to save his allowance in order to buy a particular item • 9. Determine the number of miles driven in X hours • 10. Determine how long it will take to drive home going X mph • 11. Figure the cost of X number of minutes of cell phone use if you pay X cents/minutes
