  2. The Two-Party System in American History • Our 1st Political Parties were the: • Federalist-Strong Central Government & Vigorous Executive (Active President) • Anti-Federalist-States Rights and Individual Liberties (Bill of Rights)

  3. The Two-Party System in American History • Our Parties Change Power according to a major Party Era • Party Era-25 or more years of leaderhip • These era’s change during a significant event in US History that make people want changes to current government systems

  4. Party Eras • Era of the Democrats (1800-1860) • Starts with a change from federalists who seem to give the National Gov. too much Power • (Marbury v. Madison 1803) • Ends with the Civil War and a country divided over states' rights (10th Amd.) and Slavery

  5. Party Eras • Era of the Republicans (1860-1932) • Begins with the Division of the Country over Slavery, States' Rights, and Secession. • Pivotal Period is the Assassination of Lincoln and the Reunification Agreements with Southern Ex-Confederate Soldiers. • Ends With the Great Depression

  6. Party Eras • Return of the Democrats • Wanted gov. to help individuals out of econ. Mess • Assassination of Kennedy • Ends with Vietnam War

  7. Party Eras • Era of Divided Government (1968-present) • Strong distrust of Gov. after Nixon • Presidents Have short Coattails • Pres. & Cong. Not of Same Party
