Barbara Finlayson-PittsUniversity of California at IrvineCHE-0209719 Reactions at particle surfaces OH + Cl- 1/2Cl2 + OH- An interdisciplinary team is studying how atmospheric gases react at the liquid interface with solutions found in airborne particles. The group of chemists and engineers is studying how gases such as SO2, NO2, N2O4, HNO3, CO2 and HCl bind to solvated systems, e.g., sodium chloride in sea salt, how their chemistry is affected by the liquid phase composition, and what the potential atmospheric impacts are, on a local to global scale. Five UC Irvine investigators and two international collaborators are funded through this Collaborative Research in Chemistry grant: Barbara Finlayson-Pitts (atmospheric chemistry), Donald Dabdub (airshed modeling), Benny Gerber (chemical reaction dynamics), John Hemminger (surface chemistry), Doug Tobias (molecular dynamics simulations), Leon Phillips (New Zealand, interfacial processes) and Pavel Jungwirth (Czech Republic, molecular dynamics simulations).
