History • Integrated Library Systems (ILS) provide the search mechanism • ILS web solutions (PAC) have been a poor customer experience • Solutions • Separate content sites/PAC • Custom developed integrated sites
Phoenix Public Library’s Solution • Custom development in-house • Cool stuff: Integrated customer experience, Custom developed features not offered by ILS vendors, Java/JSP database driven site, content managed by non-technical staff, Oracle Endeca Search API, ILS vendors developed APIs in partnership with PPL, load balanced WFEs, Index Servers, Clustered Database • The drawbacks: No framework, non-standard database, resource intensive, Over a dozen web applications supported, sustainability, ILS vendors caught up
What’s old is New Again • Back to the solution of a separate content and search sites • SharePoint for Content Management System (CMS), Polaris ILS PAC • Content provider comfort and training • Ability to provide new content features quickly • Ability to leverage ILS vendor’s features for search, account features and regular upgrades • Ability to easily find resources to manage technology and to build on the platform
SHAREPOINT 2010 CMS • SharePoint 2010 • Developed December 2012—May 2013 • Trained content providers with DVDs from Lynda.com • Project completed, launch delayed to accommodate other departmental priorities
Phase II: SharePoint 2013 CMS • Upgrade to newest version of SharePoint • Responsively designed templates • Incorporate what was learned in usability testing and training from Phase I • Have a really cool project to work on during Summer Reading
Content Management Strategy • Community Relations team as moderators using built in approval workflow • Content creation distributed throughout department • Developing style guide, using principles from Refresh site
