Voegwoorde (Conjunctions) • 3 Groups, 3 Rules...
Overview • What are conjunctions? • Conjunctions are used to join two sentences • When working with conjunctions, we refer to them with the abbreviation “VW” • The sentences that we join are referred to with the abbreviations “S1” and “S2”. • The conjunction (VW) is usually inserted BETWEEN S1 and S2
The three groups... • There are three types of conjunctions • Each type is called a GROUP. • Each GROUP has a specific RULE • Each RULE tells you what to do with the Verb 1 (V1) in the sentence that follows the conjunctions(VW)
In other words... Conjunctions Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Rule 1 Rule 2 Rule 3 All three rules tell you what to do with V1 of S2
Group 1... • Group 1 is the easiest to do. Why? • Rule 1: • S1 + VW + S2 (Word Order stays UNCHANGED) Let’s join Sentence 1 (S1) and Sentence 2 (S2) Let’s look at an example: Die man koop ‘n koerant S1: S2: hy lees die nuus. VW: want
Rule 2... • V1 of S2 goes to the beginning of S2 • Rule 2: • S1 + VW(Group 2) + [V1 of S2] + Rest of S2 Let’s join Sentence 1 (S1) and Sentence 2 (S2) Let’s look at an example: Die man koop ‘n koerant V1S2 S1: S2: hy lees die nuus VW: dus
Rule 3... • V1 of S2 goes to the END of S2 • Rule 3: • S1 + VW(Group 2) + S2 + [V1 of S2] Let’s join Sentence 1 (S1) and Sentence 2 (S2) Let’s look at an example: Die man koop ‘n koerant S1: V1S2 S2: hy lees die nuus VW: omdat
To revise... • 3 Groups • 3 Rules • Rule 1: S1 + VW + S2 (Word Order stays UNCHANGED) • Rule 2: S1 + VW(Group 2) + [V1 of S2] + Rest of S2 • Rule 3: S1 + VW(Group 2) + S2 + [V1 of S2]
