  1. Bytown Ski Club Survey Results Date: April 20, 2013 Prepared by: Denis Laliberte Perry Pavlovic * Lime Survey was used – it is an excellent tool.

  2. Summary • Number of responses: 156 (previous survey in 2007 was 300) • Overall key messages: • More automation • Less paperwork • More centralized pickup (tickets and registration) • Day trip: • Sunday trip • mid-week trip • 2nd location for pick-up • drop Jay Peak

  3. RegistrationQuestion 1 • Were you happy with the registration process, SKI MAX ticket offering (level of communication, timing of when it started, how long it lasted at the different site, location (companies and MEC - Mountain Equipment Co-Op), ticket distribution)? • Yes: 92% • No: 8% Key messages: • Everything as expected, club is operated in an excellent manner. Thanks a lot. • Much preferred the MEC distribution • Greatly appreciate the increasing usage of online payment.

  4. RegistrationQuestion 2 • If you could change anything with the registration process or SKI MAX ticket purchase/distribution what would it be and why would you make that change? • Would be easier if could sign up on-line, using a payment system such as Pay Pal. • Eliminate the need to register in person. • Should not be necessary to have signatures of each person, especially children. • As a returning member, everything was as expected...well organized. • Been a member now for 3 years, and am still amazed at how low tech the process is. I never know if all my registrations have gone through, and end up emailing one of the contact links to check. • Much preferred the MEC distribution location this year. Great idea. • The Ski Max tickets are great. • Registration process was good. I don’t know what is a SKI MAX ticket. is this in the FAQ • I volunteered to host a distribution site. I was never contacted until it was too late in the registration process. That being said, I also failed to follow up with the email I received from the registration coordinator (with I think, 2 days left-) in registration cycle. Perhaps next year. • MEC was a good addition. • I am wondering if this entire process can be conducted on-line as opposed to requiring on-site registration. • It took a very long time to receive our Ski max tickets for Tremblant in December and we missed our planned trip with our son (who was home from university for Xmas) to ski Tremblant. • All online with Paypal payment would be convenient

  5. General InformationQuestion 3 • Were you happy with how we generally communicated activities (direct email, Facebook, posters, too much, too often, not enough)? • Yes: 97% • No: 1% • Did not answer: 2% Key messages: • Broadcast e-mails work for me. • The more communication the better • Just the right amount • Direct email was best for me. Good frequency. • Your communications were timely and well done via email. Congrats to who was on communications • Your communications were bang on! Great eblasts and informative, quick and timely!

  6. General InformationQuestion 4 • Were you satisfied with the response/response time from the ski club to your questions? • Yes: 96% • No: 4% Key messages (34 comments out of 156 respondents): • Very Good • Very responsive • I asked one question about ticket deal to Ste Marie as the club web page indicated a deal available. I got no responses. • I thought you were very prompt considering you're volunteers! It is much appreciated. • as noted: my volunteering, well in advance of registration, to host a registration site seemed to have fallen by the wayside. Perhaps next year. • For skimax tickets the list was not updated until I queried. • It took too long. It took several e-mail, and one meeting to resolve the issue.

  7. Movie NightQuestion 5 • If we could change anything regarding the Warren Miller Movie what would those changes be (time, location, ticket selling, marketing, cancelling all future ones, etc)? Key messages: • No comments • Did not go • OK with it • Mayfair was great • Nothing to change, new location was excellent • Warren Miller night is the start of the season. Keep them going. • What is that? Is Warren miller about skiing. • Marketing, It needs more exposure.

  8. LessonsQuestion 6 • Were you happy with what you paid for regarding your lessons.  If NO please be specific on hill, instructors, quality of lessons, etc when you comment)? • Yes: 33% • No: 2% • Did not answer: 65% Key messages (Assuming 55 respondents took lessons): • (Wednesday mornings at Fortune) I was so impressed with the price I paid I've recommended others to join the club if just for this reason. Awesome lessons! • Can the club get special rate lessons (kids) from other hills besides Ski Vorlage and Camp Fortunes. Camp Fortune ski lessons are the same as directly from Camp Fortune early registration. Can Bytown's be more competitive? • I teach ski lessons at Calabogie and we welcome all to join us! • I'm always happy with the lessons. It was much more expensive this year because it included a weekday night skiing pass as well. (Vorlage). I only go up for lesson night so I get no value from the extra cost.

  9. LessonsQuestion 7 • If you didn’t sign up for lessons why didn’t you or if you did and you could change anything with the Lessons registration what would it be and why would you make that change? Key messages (86 comments out of 156 respondents): • No time • No need for lessons (have been skiing for many years. • Deadline date for lessons is too early. • I am an instructor. • No interest. • We almost did. More advanced options are appreciated. Including a Nancy Greene or racing program would be great...

  10. Day TripsQuestion 8 • Were you happy with the number of days trips offered? • Yes: 94% • No: 6% Key messages (29 comments out of 156 respondents): • It would have been nice to have more Sunday day trips to Tremblant mid season, I found a lot of them were on days that we considered too warm (not great ski conditions) • But I do not go on them because you only have a west end pickup. I would go if there was a pick up on the Quebec side. ...or if the bus left a little later - say 7 am. • Didn't actually go on any. • More trips is always better. I was very disappointed with the lack of interest leading to the cancellation of 3 Tremblant trips and the Jay Peak trip I signed up for. • there was so much snow this year, but the number of cancelled trips was excessive. • PD days were great. But Sunday trips were difficult as kids would have been too tired for Monday's school. • too bad more did not go... • More trips to Jay Peak. Try Smuggler Notch.

  11. Day TripsQuestion 9(a) • Are you only interested in trips on PD Days? • Yes: 18% • No: 54% • Did not answer: 28% Key messages (37 comments out of 156 respondents): • The PD days never line up with our school board (Clarence Rockland) so it does not really apply. • I live on Quebec side so PD days do not work for me. • I like the Tremblant trips on Sundays as well, but during the week is good too • I like some variety. • Any day is ok for me. • I have to work on PD Days; I prefer weekend trips, esp. Saturdays. • Any time - even a Sunday one would be great.

  12. Day TripsQuestion 9(b) • I am not interested in Sunday trips because I have to work Monday and I don’t want to get home late and be tired (for yourself or family)? • Yes: 26% • No: 56% • Did not answer: 18% Key messages (27 comments out of 156 respondents): • Would love a Sunday day trip. • I would prefer trips Monday to Fridays, but not on PD days. • I don't mind Sunday • Unless it's a long weekend Monday. • That would apply for anything other than Tremblant, but the Tremblant trip is ok for a Sunday. Might be better to leave by 4:30 though.

  13. Day TripsQuestion 9(c) • I am not interested in going Skiing on Sunday’s because it will be too busy on the ski hill? • Yes: 19% • No: 46% • Did not answer: 35% Key messages (28 comments out of 156 respondents): • The Monday trips are quieter on the hill, so that's nice. • I never go to Tremblant on weekends. • Sunday is better than Saturday (at Tremblant) • I would have jumped at a mid-week trip, and would have brought a friend. But I can understand that would target a different market and I don't know if you have members who are available weekdays. • Don’t think it is crowded on Sundays. • Sunday trips are fine. • I'm retired...as I suspect are quite a number of other members. Why not try a 'seniors' session on a week day...but not on a ski lesson day!

  14. Day TripsQuestion 9(d) • What day of the week that we currently don’t offer would make you sign up on a Day Trip? Key messages (71 comments out of 156 respondents): • Many comments about weekday trip • Friday and Saturday • Something mid-week might get me out.

  15. Day TripsQuestion 10 • What locations for day trips would you keep? Key messages (98 comments out of 156 respondents): • Alps • Tremblant • Sutton • Jay Peak • Whiteface • Le Massif • All are good • Close to Ottawa • Mont Ste-Marie • Sugarbush • I like all your choices – choices are good. • All…

  16. Day TripsQuestion 11 • What location for day trips would you drop? Key messages: • Anything south of the border • Jay Peak • Sutton

  17. Day TripsQuestion 12 • If you didn’t sign up for days trips why didn’t you? Key messages (98 comments out of 156 respondents): • Do not want to travel to West end and go by my house an hour later. • No weekday trips that I’m interested in. • Timing. • Didn’t fit in my schedule • Lack of time / cost • Wrong days (not a good day for me) • Age of kids…plan to in the future when they’re older.

  18. Payment optionsQuestion 13 • If we mandated only payments thru PayPal would you continue to join the club, buy Ski Max Tickets, sign up for Trips? • Yes: 90% • No: 10% Key messages (41 comments out of 156 respondents): • Absolutely, I would probably consider more purchases. • Prefer other methods than exclusively PayPal. • Best method of payment. • yes so long as it does not cost extra • Easy secure method. • Paypal is the answer • Would much prefer PayPal over cheques especially if you're just going to rip them up if the trip doesn't go! • It was the first time using Paypal and it was pretty easy

  19. Payment optionsQuestion 14 • Do you think you have to have a PayPal account to use PayPal? (note all you need is a VISA or MasterCard and use 1 time option and use PayPal like any online VISA/MasterCard payment option)? • Yes: 76% • No: 24% Key messages : • I have a Paypal account already so not an issue • It was stated on the website. • Unclear question???

  20. Weekend TripsQuestion 15 • Were you happy with the location and timing of the weekend trip? • Yes: 37% • No: 4% • Did not answer: 59% Key messages : • QC city is a good trip. Please continue to offer. • I had another commitment...

  21. Weekend TripsQuestion 16 • If we went to a different location for the weekend, what location would you want to go to? Key messages : • Le Massif • Orford / Sutton • Owl’s Head • Whiteface or Jay Peak • Mont Ste-Marie • Mont Ste-Anne is the right choice but Jay might be interesting

  22. Family NightQuestion 17 • For those of you who went to Family Night at Vorlage did you enjoy your evening? • Yes: 5% • No: 2% • I’m assuming (number of respondents): • Attended Family night: 11 out 156 or 7% • Did not attend Family night: 145 or 93% Key messages : • This was very enjoyable, I would recommend more of them, especially since it is close. I would love to see a family night at Fortune, Vorlage, and Edelweiss over the course of the season • To me, that's one of the highlights for the club. I have passed on the info and a colleague of mine joint the club because of the family night. • it was a blast!!! . Did it for the last 7 years, cannot explain why the turnout was so low. • Vorlage is always top notch for Family - feels like home.

  23. Family NightQuestion 18 If you didn’t sign up for family night, why didn’t you? Key messages : • Had other plans. • Schedule conflicts • We remember when it was held at Edelweiss. We had a great time with skiing and tubing. Vorlage seems like a smaller mountain and less to offer. • Don't like night skiing • I do not have kids • Working - Vorlage is a great place. Keep it for night skiing. • Unaware of it.

  24. OverallQuestion 19 • How happy were you with the Ski Club? • Very unhappy: 2% • Unhappy: 1% • Neutral: 6% • Happy: 53% • Very Happy: 38% Key messages : • I think this is the BEST Ski Club • Amazing value for money. I recommend it to everyone. • Thank you for the work!

  25. OverallQuestion 20 • What recommended changes would you make for next year (this is the time to say anything about everything that we didn’t cover above or you want to go into more details on, etc)? Key messages : • Create a BBS for people to post messages so if there are not enough people to sign up for the bus trip, they can set up a car pool. • I hope this survey gives some indication of how to get more members to participate on trips. Last year I don't remember having this issue. • Again, would love it if you offered downtown or Quebec pickup for day trips. • As stated previously, do everything via online forms and Paypal. You should eliminate all forms of paper registration that currently exist. • Great club! No changes required! • Do you advertise the club outside of this distribution list- I tell everyone about the Club, but yet, most people still only know about Ski Extreme. Our prices are better. What about a social night at a pub at the beginning of the season- Or a meet & greet for the club. Not sure how many people would attend, so it's just a thought. • better website, no signed waivers (online instead), more store discounts! More trips that go • Thanks to the folks who volunteer to run the Ski Club.

  26. OverallQuestion 21 • For those members who want to get their hands dirty to help run the ski club/implement the findings from above, please provide some information.   Would you be available to assist the club (volunteer) on average 4 - 8 hours per month for one of the following periods?   If you can help, please specify the period and then enter your name and email address in the comments field. Specify the area where you can assist, such as: Marketing, Web, Trip lead, other.. • Yes: 7% - this translates to 11 volunteers • No: 9% • Did not answer: 84%
