Data Gathering • Reviewed other sediment management plans • Contacted USACE and others to collect information on sources of sediments • Researched dredging technologies that could be useful in MS • Researched new methods for containment • Updated information on potential sources of funding • Reviewed historic maps and images • New BU law passed July 2010

  5. Stakeholder Meetings • Held meetings in each of the coastal counties • Invited local commissioners, state and federal agencies, interested parties and commercial dredging companies • Discussed goals of the Master Plan • Requested suggestions and information on potential BU sites • Discussed impacts from Hurricane Katrina

  6. Master Plan • Includes: • Summary of Sediment System • Transport, hurricanes, sea level rise, watershed, navigation, etc. • Information on regular dredging projects in the three coastal counties, containment options, dredging methods and methods to place material • List of 30 potential BU projects along the coast • Summary of federal, state and local regulations, permitting and testing requirements, and potential funding sources • List of stakeholders • Lots of maps

  7. Project Types • General coast-wide projects • Marsh restoration/creation, mosquito ditches, shoreline restoration, bird islands • Description of habitat and issues for each county • Projects for each county • Coastal preserves (state owned lands) • Privately owned lands

  9. Project Management Plan • Identify a variety of types of projects • Assume this is the first step • Be bold in the size of the projects • Take on issues • Private landownership • Gulf sturgeon • Crossing state lines

  10. The PMP • Chose 3 projects for each county • Urgency • Ease of getting it approved • Type of project • Capacity • For each: • Developed schematic design, ROM for construction costs, environmental issues, and data needs • Next steps

  11. Next Steps • Begin permitting process for 3 sites in each county • Find funding for construction of containment • Evaluate need for upland site for small quantities of material for later placement • Keep momentum going • Increase public awareness and education of program
