  3. Definition • Hydrophobia is an abnormal fear of water

  4. Symptoms • Anxiety when your exposed to water • Must do everything possible to avoid water • Don’t act normal around water • Feel powerless around water

  5. Effects • Could be afraid of bathing • Won't travel by boat • Won’t go to the beach • Won’t go swim

  6. Facts • can be mental, emotional and physical • 18.1% of Americans are aquaphobia • Studies shown that aquaphobia people are most afraid of submerging their nose and ears in water • Can have shortness of breath from being near water

  7. Predominance • It is the most common mental illness for women of all ages

  8. Genetics • Aquaphobia is not genetically linked

  9. Physical characteristics • Shaking of the body if near water. • The person may start sweating. • The person may have some chest pain. • The person may have numbness or tingling. • They may have hot and cold flashes. • They may get dizzy.

  11. Treatment • Outpatient: can expose yourself to water a little bit at a time • Inpatient: can go to a rehab center • Medication: Beta blockers, Antidepressants, Benzodiazepines

  12. Changes in treatment • There is no change in treatment for aquaphobia right now. • There used to not be treatment for aquaphobia.
