The importance of reading in Higher Education • Reading is an essential element of a degree programme • You need to demonstrate an informed understanding of your subject area • There are a range of sources you are expected to engage with such as textbooks, academic journal articles and industry publication, for example
Why reading matters! • Reading not only supports, but is also supported by, other skills • Effective reading is founded in having a clear purpose to not only what you are reading but also why you are reading • So, when you pick up your next textbook or article, ask yourself why you have selected that text; is it to inform an assignment you are working on or is it to supplement a recent lecture or seminar? • Therefore, create connections between what you are currently reading and other sources of information
Purposeful reading: creating connections Connections between your current reading and other sources of information may include: • Reading to build up an understanding of a topic? • Background reading to inform an assignment? • Reading for specific theories and/or practice By considering connections between different sources are will begin to build a more synthesised picture of how information from different sources may fit together
