Assignment : ConflictThe fire • The fire is a main event for these characters. Explore the purposes for the inclusion of the fire in the story. • What or whom do you think caused the fire? Give proof from the story. • How does the fire continue to “burn” or “smoke” in the characters lives? • What is the symbolic significance of the fire and the ways that it represents unresolved conflict?
Assignment : Context Clues Detective • When Momma decides to give the quilts to Maggie she says her decision is prompted by a sudden emotional insight similar to the inspiration she gets at church. What details so far have shed light on Mama’s decision making process? • Be a detective and search the story for clues that foreshadow Mama’s decision about the quilts. Use the following questions to help you find clues, and then briefly summarize each one. (8-10 clues) • What does Mama think about Dee and her accomplishments? • What does Mama know about Maggie’s perception of Dee? • Is Mama proud of both of her daughters? • Does Mama think that each girl needs the same things from her or different things? • Do the clues you gather support Mama’s decision?
