Using the conditional • The present conditional is used to… • …express a wish or make a suggestion I’d like to work in an office • …make a polite request Could you tell me where the town hall is? • …refer to an action which depends on another event or situation (an if-sentence) If I won the lottery, I would buy a car

  3. Forming the conditional • The conditional is simple to form once you are confident with the future and imperfect tenses • The conditional is made with… THE SAME STEM AS THE FUTURE TENSE THE SAME ENDING AS THE IMPERFECT

  4. The Future Stem • The future stem for all regular verbs is the INFINITIVE (For –re verbs, you need to drop the final –e) • e.g. I will speak = Je parlerai • e.g. I will finish = Je finirai • e.g. I will sell = Je vendrai • Don’t forget the common exceptions!! avoir être faire aller savoir pouvoir devoir aur- saur- ser- fer- ir- pourr- devr-
