  5. Exponents and Multiplication To Multiply powers with the SAME base: **Add the exponents and keep the base** Examples: 1) 32∙ 36 = 38 2) am ∙ an = am + n

  6. Exponents and Division To Divide powers with the SAME base: **Subtract the exponents and keep the base** Examples: 1) 8 5 = 8 2 8 3 2) a m = a m - n a n

  7. Zero as an Exponent • For any non-zero number a, a 0 = 1 • Examples: 1) 9 0 = 1 2) 15 0 = 1 3) 1 0 = 1

  8. Negative Exponents • For any non-zero number a and integer n, a –n = 1 an Example: 8 -5 = 1 85
