  2. Understanding Bible Basics • The Bible is 66 different books • Written by 40 different people • Written over a period of about 2,000 years • Consist of 2 volumes called the Old Testament and the New Testament • Although spread out in 66 different books, the Bible is a single message • Written in 3 languages: Hebrew, Aramaic & Greek • You CANNOT truly learn the depths of the Bible without accepting Jesus Christ and help from the Holy Spirit (John 14:25, 1 Corinthians 2:11-14)

  3. Scripture Lesson Last Week’s Lesson: John 8:31-32 Disciples of Jesus Christ Part 2 • 31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” • 34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” • This week’s Lesson: John 13:34-35

  4. Scripture Lesson John 13:34-35 • 34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Abide in His word (John 8:31-32) Jesus' Disciples Love one another (John 13:34-35)

  5. Scripture Lesson John 13:34-35 Jesus' Disciples • 34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” New Commandment Love One Another Jesus' Disciples

  6. Jesus' Disciples • 12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. • 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. • 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. • Love - Greek reference #25: agapao; to love someone of something with total commitment. • For an example, see John 15:12-14

  7. Jesus' Disciples • The Different Words for Love in the Greek Language • Eros is passionate love, with sensual desire and longing. • Storge means "affection" in modern Greek; it is natural affection, like that felt by parents for offspring. • Agapao from the Greek word agan which means much. The word means a love that is totally committed to someone or something. • phileo (or philia) – a root word for love that denotes a general type of love, used for love between family, between friends, a desire or enjoyment of an activity, as well as between lovers. This is the only other word for "love" used in the ancient text of the New Testament besides agape, but even then it is used substantially less frequently.

  8. Jesus' Disciples • Love for God Examples of the usages of the word agapao in the New Testament: = Luke 10:27 – “Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all they strength, and with all thy mind….” = John 14:15 – “If you love Me, keep My commandments…” = Matthew 19:19 – “thou shall love thy neighbor as thy self.” = John 13:34 – “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” = Luke 6:35 – “But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.” • Love for Christ • Love for your neighbor & self • Love for other believers • Love for your enemies

  9. Jesus' Disciples Examples of the usages of the word agapao in the New Testament: • An example of wrong love = John 3:19 – “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved [agapao] darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” = Luke 11:43 – “Woe to you Pharisees! For you love [agapao] the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.” = 2 Timothy 4:10 – “…for Demas has forsaken me, having loved [agapao] this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica…” Agapao is the main ingredient to abiding in Jesus Christ

  10. John 14:15-17, and 23 Jesus' Disciples • 15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive,…” • 23 “…If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; …”

  11. Jesus' Disciples Agapao - God Jesus Neighbors Ourselves Other Believers Our Enemies

  12. Jesus' Disciples 1st Thessalonians Chapter 4 verses 9-12 • 9 But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another; 10 and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; 11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing. • 2 Corinthians 3:2 & 3: “2 You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; 3 clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.” Why?

  13. Jesus' Disciples WARNING! • Do NOT defile the name CHRIST in Christian • Remember the 3rd Commandment “Thou shall not take the Lord’s name in vain.” • A Christian MUST behave as a Christian - otherwise you are blaspheming the name of Christ Blaspheme: to use speech to bring down another’s value, honor, or due respect.

  14. Jesus' Disciples • 12 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. • John 15:15

  15. Jesus' Disciples • John 15:15 Friend – not servant? • 12 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. Does God still tell us what is going on and what He is going to do? They knew what the Master is doing! • Who else in Scripture is called God’s friend? • Abraham – 2 Chronicles 20:7, Isaiah 41:8 • Did God tell Abraham what He was going to do? • See Genesis 18:16-21

  16. Great hatred towards one another • The Man of Sin, the false Messiah will come to world power • Peace will be declared in the Middle East • The Jewish temple will be rebuilt • The Jewish temple will be desecrated by the Man of Sin • There will be cosmic disturbances • Anarchy • Family members will betray family members • The love for others will be replaced with selfish ambitions • Believers in Jesus will be greatly persecuted – many to point death • Great wars, diseases, and civil unrest • A 3rd of the earth will be burned up by nuclear war • A 3rd of the waters will dry up • The true God of the Bible will be hated • But before all of this… • …Jesus Christ will return for His church YES

  19. John 13:31-36 • 31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” • 36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” • Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” John 7:32-34 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things concerning Him, and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take Him. 33 Then Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me. 34 You will seek Me and not find Me, and where I am you cannot come.” ?

  20. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” • 36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” • Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” His return to the Father in heaven.

  21. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” • 36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” • Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” • Tacheos (5030) briefly or soon • Husteron (hoos-ter-on) more lately, latter, eventually, at the end (same word is used in describing the latter times in 1 Timothy 4:1).

  22. John 14:1-3 • 1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

  23. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 • 13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. • 15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. 16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. The Harpazo

  24. 1 Corinthians 15:50-53 • 50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. 51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

  36. God Has Your Back! • Do not fear the changes that comes with repentance • 1 Peter 4:3-5 • 3 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. 4 In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. 5 They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. Fear Not! Greek Reference #810 – Riot, unruly,…..or otherwise “common”

  37. Don’t Fear the Change! • God told Jacob in Genesis 46 FEAR NOT to go into Egypt, a strange land, for I will make thee a great nation • In Deuteronomy 20 God said to the children of Israel FEAR NOT when you go onto battle for I AM with you • In Isaiah 35 God said to the fearful hearted FEAR NOT your God comes with vengeance to save you • In Jeremiah 46 God told Israel when they were in Babylonian captivity FEAR NOT for I will save you from afar • In Luke 1 an Angel told Mary to FEAR NOT for she has found favor with God • In Revelation 1 Jesus told John to FEAR NOT, I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last Fear Not!

Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. 12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. • 13 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’
