  2. 3 8 6 Issue & Debate ▶Reading Comprehension Should Schools Stop Teaching Cursive Writing? The debate over the need for cursive is reignited in the U.S. as the Indiana State will no longer require its public schools to teach cursive writing. State officials told school leaders that schools may continue to teach cursive to students as standard, or they may decide to drop cursive from school curriculum. Those who support the idea stress that we are now living in a technology-based society with computers and mobile communication devices developing fast. In this digital era, students prefer typing on computers and texting to writing things out by hand. Many people feel they just don’t use cursive writing so why waste time teaching it. They also point out that instead of cursive writing as a mandatory course, it would be a lot better to teach students to become more proficient in keyboard use. ”We’re really looking at understandings for students living in the 21st century,” says a dean of a university in Georgia. “So, the question we should ask is, ‘Is cursive writing one of those critical skills that students need?’” On the other hand, many parents and teachers are against the move, insisting that it is important to continue teaching cursive in classes. They stress that learning and practicing cursive writing is still necessary to communicate, since hand-written lessons and exams are still important in many schools. They also note that it is also important to comprehend hand-written notes and instructions as well as what others have written on a piece of paper. There are even cases when one has to read an old hand-written letter and this gives another reason why students still need cursive writing courses. In addition, cursive writing is formal, and it looks pretty. Also, in many cases, someone with a good handwriting looks more like an educated person. ”When I get a letter from an 18-year-old student and it’s printed, it’s hard for me to read the content and I don’t think much of it,” says the principal at St. Francis Catholic School. With the technology that changes our way of communicating and writing developing fast, it seems the debate on cursive handwriting will continue. ☞ Choose the best answer based on the article.
