  1. Happy Monday *Have homework out and be ready to grade On the next page of your notebook: Date: 1/16/17 Title: Simplifying Radicals Objective: Simplify Radicals

  2. 3 Rules for simplifying radicals: • No perfect squares in radicands • No fractions inside radicals • No radicals in denominators of fractions Square Roots and Radicals

  3. Perfect Squares 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225, 256, 289, 324, 361, 400

  4. *When simplifying radicals, we leave it in radical form. DO NOT change to a decimal.

  5. Vocab Radicands- the “stuff” inside the radical Radicals- the square root/cube root sign

  6. Perfect Square Factor * Other Factor Simplify = = = = LEAVE IN RADICAL FORM = = = = = =

  7. = = = • There is a radical in the numerator but there’s no fraction INSIDEthe radical. Rule #2:No fractions inside radicals

  8. = = = • There is a radical in the numerator but there’s no fraction INSIDEthe radical. Rule #2:No fractions inside radicals

  9. Square Roots and Radicals • No radicals in denominators of fractions. • Ex: • = = = = = = = = 1 How do you multiply fractions?

  10. Square Roots and Radicals • No radicals in denominators of fractions. • Ex: • = = = = = = = = 1 How do you multiply fractions?

  11. Square Roots and Radicals • No radicals in denominators of fractions. • Ex: • = = = = = = = = 1 How do you multiply fractions?

  12. Square Roots and Radicals • No radicals in denominators of fractions. • Ex: • = = = = = = = = 1 How do you multiply fractions?

  13. Square Roots and Radicals • Simplifying radicals: • = = • = = = = = 4

  14. Simplify these radicals: Square Roots and Radicals

  15. 7 • 3 • 11 3 Practice 5 3 7 3 11

  16. Write as one number under the radicand 3 5 Reverse the process (un-simplify the simplified radical form )
