  9. How to Teach? Pedagogy comes from a Greek word that literally means “to lead the child”. It is the science and art of teaching or the HOW to teach. In Australia there are different models in states but the common features are about how children learn and therefore how teachers need to teach

  10. SA’s position on Teaching and Learning In South Australia teachers draw on the resource called Teaching for Effective Learning (TfEL) based on DECD research that spans over 14 years The document clearly outlines the belief that we are all learners and the conditions for learning is important for all students, teachers and leaders.

  11. Do the three points below resonate with you from your own experiences at school? How was your experience at school the same or different? TALK to the person beside you. • Did I feel safe to be challenged with my learning? • Did I know what I was learning and how I was learning it? • Did my learning connect to my life inside and outside of school?

  13. Teachers need resources to plan HOW they guide teaching and learning activities • Range of programs that suit their context: • Running Records • Bounce Back • Tactical Teaching: Reading etc • Task: What types of resources are used: • Across the whole school? • In the classes that you support?

  14. Designing Learning Experiences • Now we know: • That all teachers have quality career stages that outline and define their work in the classroom through the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers • That all teachers draw from resources about how they will teach, in SA teachers use TfEL ……. But what will they teach? And how will they teach it?

  15. The Australian Curriculum The Australian Curriculum is guided by the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians was adopted by all education ministers in 2008. The Melbourne Declaration emphasises the importance of knowledge, understanding, skills and values and a range of cross-disciplinary skills that will support all young Australians to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals and active and informed citizens.

  16. The Australian Curriculum • The curriculum includes: • a rationale and a set of aims • an overview of how the learning area is organised • year level descriptions • content descriptions (knowledge, understanding and skills) specifying what teachers are expected to teach • content elaborations to provide additional clarity • a glossary to support consistent understanding of terms used

  17. Teachers have an intentional design and purpose to what is planned for learning and assessment SSO support in classrooms is key to this designing process at it allows teachers to differentiate learning for their students.

  18. Self-Assessment Tool Self-Assessment Tool Assessment Teachers want ALL students to succeed and believe they can The Australian Curriculum outlines achievement standards for each year level that adds onto the previous year’s learning Assessment is for learning and also to support planning for individual needs SSO’s have a big role in supporting students to reach the achievement standards, based on the learning program designed by the teacher
