  1. Feudalism – a social, political and economic system developed after the fall of Rome to provide protection in exchange for land, loyalty and service.

  2. Role of : • King-owned vast amounts of land/granted it to nobles for their loyalty and protection • Lord (Noble) (Bishop) – accepts land in exchange for loyalty and protection to the King • Vassal (lesser lord) – accepts land (fief) in exchange for loyalty and protection to the lord.

  3. Knight (squire,page) – usually the third son/provided protection for the land. Guided by the code of Chivalry. – honor/ ethics • Serf – worked the land for the vassals, lords and king. Could not leave the manor • Life is hard, difficult, • miserable

  4. Characteristics of a • Fief: estate granted to a lord/vassal • Manor: a lord/vassal’s house and land self sufficient, protected by knights and worked by serfs Three characteristics of the lord/vassal relationship. • Lord gives land. • Vassal provides protection/services • The Feudal contract sets up the terms of agreement.
