  2. Disability… • Consequence of an impairment. • Impairment: Problem in body function or structure; deviation form normal • May be from birth, or may develop in one’s lifetime • May be physical, mental, intellectual, developmental – etc.

  3. Disability: Everyone’s plight • We’re all disabled in one way or other • Can happen to anyone • Diabetes • Road accident • Menengitis

  13. Benefits enjoyed by PWDs!!! • Duty free vehicles • If one meets qualification for a job they are almost automatically employed • In UoN students are allocated special rooms • Transport to and from lecture halls • Medical cover for disabled children • Salary is tax-free

  18. What to do? • Understand that some people have mental disabilities: • ADHD: Attention Deficient Hyperactivity Disorder

  28. Wouldn’t you be? • Some attitude towards PWDs

  29. Or, how would you feel if everyone thinks you can’t? Always ask before according help to a Person with Disability

What do PWDs want? • Systems to be put in place; then many times they manage very well • Proper ramps – access to buildings... • Accessible toilets • Accessible parking slots • Proper signage; braille; sign language ; access to hearing aids, wheelchairs • A word of kindness • Opportunities to develop themselves!

  32. How to help? • Raise awareness: PWDs have a great potential • Treat them as you want to be treated. Don’t accord help when they can do it • Give them opportunities – patience • Don’t assume everyone is alright; you may be doing a great injustice

  33. How to help? • In the college: • Create a database of persons with disability so they can be assisted • Any suggestions about how to make the college more disability friendly are most welcome
