  4. III. Intimacy • Deep and meaningful kind of sharing between two people.

  5. IV. Dating allows adolescents the opportunity to: • Strengthen self-esteem. • Improve social skills • Become secure with one’s masculinity of femininity • Develop skills in intimacy • Understand personal needs

  6. V. Sexual feelings • Feelings that result from a strong physical and emotional attraction for another person.

  7. VI. Abstinence • Choosing not to engage in sexual intercourse. • The only 100% foolproof method of not contracting an STD or getting pregnant.

  8. VII. Life skills to support abstinence. • Be involved in activities that promote self-worth. • Establish goals. • Develop loving family relationships. • Be assertive and use decision-making skills. • Establish relationships with trusted adults. • Select friends who choose abstinence. • Date people who have chosen abstinence. • Avoid situations that are tempting. • Abstain from use of alcohol and other drugs. • Select entertainment that promotes sex in a monogamous marriage.

  9. VIII. Abusive relationship • A relationship in which a person is abusive toward another. Neglect. Sexual abuse. Physical abuse. Emotional abuse.

  10. IX. Codependence • Person loses personal identity, has frozen feelings, and copes ineffectively. Don’t talk to other people about family problems. Feel that they don’t deserve to be treated with respect. Cannot trust others.

  11. X. Evaluating dating relationships. Does the person I’m interested in dating: Demonstrate self-loving behavior? Express feelings in a healthful way? Adhere to family guidelines? Set goals and make plans to reach them? Balance time between family, friends, and other commitments? Avoid abusive behavior? Avoid abusing and misusing alcohol and other drugs? Recognize the benefits of abstinence?
