  3. Connections to Standards Let’s dig into your writing standards in the curriculum guide. We will use a graphic organizer to help us dig into the standards. As you fill in the graphic organizer, think about what your “Aha moments” are and then capture this on the organizer.

  4. Digging in to Our Standards _________________________________ has several specific writing standards. Our next writing standard this nine weeks..... Another key writing standard this quarter is.... Which influences how…. Another important standard in our grade is.... This is important because...

  5. Agree or Disagree, & Why? Writing about material students read enhances their reading comprehension.

  6. Agree or Disagree, & Why? Teaching writing strengthens students’ reading skills.

  7. Agree or Disagree, & Why? Increasing how much students write improves how well they read.

  8. What does the research say? •Work in teams of 5 •Divide the article: –Introduction (p. 9-10) –Have Students Write About What They Read (p. 13-15) –Have Students Write Summaries of a Text (p. 15-16) –Have Students Write Notes About a Text (p. 16) –Have Students Answer Questions About a Text in Writing, or Create and Answer Written Questions About a Text (p. 17)

  11. Why writing frames? Text structure is different across content areas. It’s our job to teach students the structure of the text we expect them to understand. Writing frames are a perfect way to teach text structure. Being able to produce writing that matches a text structure is a more complex skill than reading and taking in information because it involves synthesis…combining what I read with my thoughts about what I read and putting it into my words.

  14. Team Time • With your PLC, review the sample writing frames • Discuss how you can use these frames in your upcoming lessons • Everyone will bring an example to Oct. ERD that they have used in their classroom.
