He went back to teaching but that did not work out • Got involved in politics and became a powerful speaker • 1913 he married a woman of higher standing • WWI he reenlisted and saw and loved a lot of combat • He won the Iron Cross and Iron Cross First Class • Became an officer • After the war he became a radical anti-Semite • Came to believe fully the idea that Jews were a separate race engaged in a sinister plot to rule the world • By 1920 he became interested in the Nazi party and started his first anti-Semitic newspaper Deutsche Sozialist • He began to focus on claims of specific Jewish crimes • He focused on racial purity and blood purity • He was racial prejudiced against blacks as well • He became the leader of the Nazi Party in Nuremberg • 1923 he established the newspaper Der Stürmer

Streicher was involved with Hitler in the Beer Hall Putsch • He served one month in Landsberg Prison with Hitler • Like Hitler he became a popular and sought after speaker • He became a celebrity • Became totally dedicated to the proclamation of Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda • Mass propaganda had to be simple, repetitious, and emotional • Effective propaganda required saying the same thing in different ways • He supplied the German citizens with a steady supply of material demonstrating the depravity of the Jews • Jews were responsible for the world’s ills • Adolf Hitler and Nazism were Germany’s Salvation • His fundamental argument: Most of the world’s ills would vanish with the Jews. • Relied heavily on the standard themes of sex, religion, and violence

Nazi Party and Christianity: • Nazis had a “new” positive Christianity that was in no way committed to the ancient body of Christian doctrine • Streicher argued the Christian religion no longer carried a true view of Christianity • He claimed not to be attacking Christianity, but rather the perverted Jewish version of it the Jews had forced on Germany • He saw as well as almost all Nazis and Germany a “new Christ in the person of Adolf Hitler” • He believed Hitler was sent by God and had much in common with Christ! (?) • Nazi policy was to replace the Gospel of Christ with the Gospel of Hitler • The Church had sanctioned attacks of Jews for centuries • In battling the Jews, Hitler was engaged in the noblest possible human struggle: “By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord’s work!
