If participation from the ENTIRE class is not acceptable, I will start having reading quizzes and/or other assignments to ensure reading is occurring.

  11. Animal Farm: Chapter 1 • What picture is presented of Mr. Jones in the first paragraph? • Why did Old Major want all the animals to meet together? • Describe Old Major as Orwell presents him. • Major makes a political speech. What is the essence of what he says to the animals? • Describe the irony of the line: “All men are enemies. All animals are comrades.” What could this line also be foreshadowing?

  12. Animal Farm: Chapter 2 • Why was it the pigs that were to spread Major’s revolutionary gospel? • What is “animalism”? • What “lies” have been told to the animals by Moses, the raven? What does Moses represent? • List the seven commandments. How were these commandments to be regarded?

  13. Journal When the animals on neighboring farms sang “Beasts of England,” it angered and frightened their owners. Describe a song or type of music you know that has this same kind of effect on others.

  14. Animal Farm: Chapter 3 • Describe the situation on Animal Farm, as it exists during the idealistic days following the revolution. • What is the function of the pigs at this time? • The animals had many difficulties but were able to overcome them due to Boxer. Who is he and why is he so admired? • Describe the flag and state its significance. • What happened to the nine newly born puppies? Does this contradict the philosophy of Animal Farm?

  15. Animal Farm: Chapter 4 • Identify both Mr. Pilkington and Mr. Fredrick. • What do they say about the rebellion on Animal Farm? • What was the reason for the “war” in this chapter? • What was Boxer’s reaction to the war? How does Snowball reassure him?
