  2. Where did everyone who came over here come from? • People from Europe began moving to the America region. • No one was there except for Native Americans!

  3. Box 1: European Settlements • European Settlements: • 1500s-1700s: Spanish, French, English and Dutch • People from Spain settled in the SW, Florida and Texas • French-went to Canada, Mississippi and Louisiana areas. • Still today, Louisiana counties are called PARISHES

  4. Roanoke, NC 1587 Sir Walter Raleigh Problems: Not enough supplies Winter approaching Cpt. John White sailed back to get supplies Returned 1590 Everyone was GONE! Box 2: 1st English Attempt

  5. Lost Colony • What happened? • Disease • Starvation • Indian attack • Assimilation to nearby Indian tribe • Only clue: words “CROATOAN” carved into a tree

  7. Group of English merchants who secured a charter from king to develop land in new world Opportunity to make a profit in selling of land to settlers Jamestown- 1607 1st permanent settlement Leader was John Smith Virginia Company

Basic daily rations for each traveler on the ship to Jamestown included: • dried hardtack (biscuits that were baked until all moisture was removed) • salted, dried or pickled meats and fish • Cheese • oatmeal or barley • a gallon of beer or wine. • In bad weather, no cooking was allowed on board the ships, so the settlers soaked the biscuits in water to make them edible. • Cheese and cold pickled meats completed these meals • Lack of fresh water also contributed to the many dead

  9. This charter included all lands in North Carolina not occupied by Spanish or French • These people founded the first English settlement. • Named it JAMESTOWN! • Jamestown-1st successful English settlement, 1607 (20 years after lost colony)

  10. Hard times- b/c no real workers Don’t know the land or how to farm Disease No food Powhatan- Indian tribe English received their help But as #s grew, so did tensions and Powhatan ATTACKED! Despite these rocky beginnings, Powhatan did exhibit trust of the newcomers when he allowed his sons and at least one daughter (Pocahontas) to travel to and from the settlement. The English needed the Indians --corn, venison, and fish Indians guaranteed their survival by supplying them.

  11. Starving Time • Powhatan killed colonists livestock • Destroyed their crops • Led to famine • 600 to 60 survive • Now what? • Needed laws/government over there so they set up the 1st representative democracy in the Americas!

  12. Box 4: Jamestown- please understand: • More colonists do come, now what? • Remember, they are all loyal to England and the king. • Only here for adventure, money, advancement… • Establish some sort of government to be in place locally! • 1st democratic gov’t- House of Burgesses!

  13. House of Burgesses • 2 representatives from each town/community to represent the people • 12 men • Helped make laws/bring order to this area • Remember, “leader” is sitting on a throne in England. *** marked the beginning of colonial self-government!*** 1st REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY!!!

  14. John Rolfe and tobacco- cha ching! • Tobacco as a ca$h crop- • Grown for trade and profit • John Rolfe- • crossbred with a Brazilian form. Everyone loved it. • Married Pocahantas • Attraction, but also allowed for peace treaty between the Powhatans and colonists.

  15. Pocahontas-married around 17 • Married Rolfe in a Christian ceremony (changed her name to Rebecca) 1614 • d.-1617

Headright system- • New problem: need labor source • 50 free acres to new colonists in exchange for labor • Indentured servants- • People who can’t afford trip or tax on land • Labor contract for 7 yrs in exchange for trip over and food/shelter • You work—get set up!!!! Good for a lot of English, who were not wealthy. • Could start a life…

  17. ON BACK Slave trade also began at this time: • Triangular trade- • Traded rum, molasses and slaves • Europe to Africa to Americas • Trade route in shape of triangle • Middle Passage- • Middle part of the 3 part voyageAcross the Atlantic ocean • Many Africans died during this part

  19. First Rebellion -Indian dispute on the frontier -Colonists ask for protection from Virginia Gov’t, but were denied -Bacon’s Rebellion -Nathaniel Bacon led the frontier colonists in a rebellion against the Virginia gov’t -showed signs of discontent with leadership

Last box p6 • Indian dispute- • Line was drawn to keep settlers out but some colonists crossed line and were attacked • Bacon’s rebellion- (Nathanial Bacon led rebellion) • Bacon was so angry-marched on Jamestown • was defeated • Showed signs of discontent- • Problem: fighting Indians and now fighting and each other.

Puritans • When you think Puritans, think old strict church lady… • -Puritans • wanted to rid the English church of Catholic traditions • Literal interpretation of the bible. • Henry VIII begins the Anglican (Protestant) church in 1534 • He was Catholic, officially changes English religion forever!! • -John Winthrop-founded Massachusetts • Governor of Boston • -City on a Hill (name of his speech) • Felt colonists needed to be an example to the world • -settled in Massachusetts • -strong connection between church and state • -strict adherence to Puritan rules NO DRINKING OR SWEARING!

Pilgrims • -Pilgrims also called Separatistsbecause they wanted to practice their own religion • -Plymouth Massachusetts-- 1620 • -Mayflower Compact • -set up direct democracy for the colony • -leads to traditions of town meetings • -colony struggled but received Indian help to grow crops • Thanksgiving---Squanto • Squanto was Indian friend to Pilgrims. • -William Bradford (governor of Plymouth)

Puritan Dissent- people “dissing” the Puritan beliefs • Roger Williams- • Wanted a separation of church and state • Was exiled from the colony in Mass b/c of his views • Left and founded Rhode Island • Anne Hutchinson- • Believed in individual worship • We should believe in whatever we want… • Banished and fled to RI where Williams went
