Poor grades can significantly affect your GPA, primarily if you receive an "F" in a 3-credit course. Knowing the right time to drop a class can be crucial for maintaining a strong academic record. Typically, students have 8-9 weeks during a 16-week semester to withdraw with a "W" grade, allowing time to evaluate performance through initial exams. Exercise caution as too many "W" grades can impact financial aid eligibility. This guide explores how a strategic withdrawal can influence your semester GPA positively.

Determining whether or not to drop a class • Students usually have 8-9 weeks (during a 16-week semester) to drop a class with a “W” grade. • This window of time allows a student to find out his progress on say, the first two exams of the semester (and possibly a midterm grade), prior to making an informed decision about whether to drop. • Because too many “W” grades can affect financial aid eligibility, caution and good judgment should be used when deciding whether to drop a class. However, if exercised on limited occasions, a “W” (vs. an “F”) can make a big difference in a semester GPA.
