  1. The Changing World Where will we be in 2000 more years? By Sammie Miller

PANGAEA • Originally thought of by Alfred Wegener • A giant super-continent that was made up of tectonic plates • The plates moved to form the continents we know of today • Theory not immediately accepted by scientists (didn’t explain WHY the continents move) • Existed during the Carboniferous period • PANGAEA- all lands

Alfred Wegener • Lived from 1880-1930 • Also studied astronomy, as well as geology • brought him to the discovery of the changing universe, so the world is changing • When Alfred discovered Pangaea, the Contradiction Theory was being argued about • Contradiction Theory- theory about the beginning of the Earth. • Arthur Holmes, Harry Hess, R. Deitz helped in discovery; proved that the mantle basically moved the plates

  4. How did Pangaea Change?!?! The plates and boundaries move, and in different ways!

Convergent Boundary • Happens when 2 tectonic plates push into each other • One is forced under the other and becomes part of the mantle • Causes island arc systems, trenches, mountains, and volcanoes • When parts of the mountains and volcanoes break off, they cause landslides and mudslides • Example: The Aleutian Islands and Trench (North American and Pacific plate push into each other)

Divergent Boundary • Happens when two plates pull apart from each other • Magma seeps through and cools • Causes the growth of oceanic crust and ridge systems. • The ocean floor is spreading in result • Example: North American and Eurasian Plate pulling apart from each other; the continents are getting farther and farther apart

Transform Boundary • Happens when two plates slide past each other • Only Boundary that doesn’t destroy or add to the plates • Causes Earthquakes and Faults • Earthquakes relieve strain between the plates • Example: San Andreas Fault; the North American and Pacific plate slide past each other- lots of earthquakes in the area

Ohio and the U.S. • On the North American Plate • Bordered by the Pacific, Juan De Fuca, Cocos, and Caribbean Plate • Ohio- recently been mini earthquakes • Believed we live on a weak part of the plate Other susceptible hazards in the U.S. • Alaska- Volcanoes • Cascades- Volcanoes • San Andreas Fault=earthquakes • Appalachian Mtns.-ancient convergent boundary; mountains • Caribbean- Volcanoes

  10. The Very Distant Future • Many years from now, the world will not look the same as it looks today • The east and west hemisphere will pull away from each other and might meet on the other side • The Atlantic ocean will grow, and the Pacific will shrink • Himalayan Mtns. will probably grow
