  3. Shoplifting Statistics • More than $5 million worth of goods are stolen from retailers each day. • Approximately 1 in 11 people are shoplifters in our nation today. • There is no profile of a typical shoplifter. Men and women shoplift about equally as often.

  4. Shoplifting Statistics • Approximately 25 percent of shoplifter are kids, 75 percent are adults. Most adult shoplifters say they started shoplifting in their teens. • Many shoplifters buy and steal merchandise in the same visit. Shoplifters commonly steal from $2 to $200 per incident depending upon the type of store and item(s) chosen. • Shoplifting is often not a premeditated crime. For every 10 shoplifters only 2 planned to steal in advance.

  5. Shoplifting Statistics • 9 to 10 kids say they know other kids who shoplift. • On average the chance a shoplifter will get caught is 1 in every 48 times. • Habitual shoplifters steal an average of 1.6 times per week.

  6. BBB Customers Code of Ethics • Education - Know your rights and responsibilities, comparison shop, read contracts, and ask questions before buying. Investigate offers that sound "too good to be true." • Truthfulness - Don’t return used goods under the pretense that they are damaged if they are not. This practice, as well as price tag switching and shoplifting (or failure to report shoplifters), costs all consumers in terms of time and money. • Honesty - Exhibit the same kind of honesty you expect to receive from business firms. If a sales clerk makes a mistake in your favor, point it out as quickly as you would a mistake in the company's favor.

  7. BBB Customers Code of Ethics • Integrity -Live up to your obligations. Enter agreements in good faith, and pay your bills when they are due. If you can’t, inform the merchant and explain why • Courtesy - Recognize that store employees are individuals. Treat them as you wish to be treated. • Sensibility - Don’t make unreasonable demands. Respect the firm’s right to limit services and products offered. Don’t expect to get something for nothing. Always turn to you BBB for assistance with any marketplace decision or dispute.
