  1. What is a eulogy? • Comes from a word meaning “praise” • It is a speech or piece of writing in praise of someone or something • Often delivered during a funeral service

  2. Your job • Write an original eulogy • This can be about: a real person you have lost in your life, a fictional character, a historical figure, yourself, your favorite childhood toy, that awesome sweater you lost last year, the delicious sandwich you made for lunch that you wish lasted longer, etc… • Should be anywhere from 1.5-2 pages long • Be prepared to read it aloud to the class

  3. A eulogy can sound like… • A short biography. Tell someone/something’s story from start to finish. Focus on the person/thing and its life more generally. • A series of snapshots. Tell little anecdotes about all of the personal interactions you have had with the person/thing or memorable stories others have experienced with the person/thing. • Or some combination of both! • May be addressed to the person/thing directly (ex: “I’ll never forget the time that you…”) or to the audience (ex: “We are here today to…”)

  4. Some tips • Try to represent the person/thing as a whole. How could you best sum up the significance of its life/existence? • Practice your eulogy out loud, alone and to a small audience. Hearing the words will help you refine your speech.
