  1. SEMINAR ON VIRTUAL LAN TECHNOLOGY

  2. Basic Devices In Network Backbone Bridges Switches Routers Hubs

  3. LAN • Local Area Network is network of computers located within the same area • Network as a single broadcast domain • Routers take more time to process incoming data

  4. Physical view of LAN

  5. VLAN • VLAN stands for Virtual Local Area Network. • Viewed as a group of devices on different physical LAN • can communicate with each other as if they were all on the same physical LAN • Configured through software rather than hardware • extremely flexible

  6. Physical view of VLAN

  7. How VLAN Work...?

  8. VLAN types • Layer1- Port-based VLANs • Layer2 - MAC address based VLANs • Layer3 - Protocol based VLANs

  9. Layer-1 VLANs • Port-based VLANs • Uses the physical layer port number on the front of the VLAN switch to assign computers to VLAN segments • Network manager must know which computer is connected to which port • Advantage • Configuration is fairly straightforward

  10. Vlan defined by port

  11. Layer-2 VLANs • MAC-based VLANs • Uses the data link layer address to form the VLANs • Advantage: • Simpler to manage when computers are moved • No configuration needed

  12. Layer-3 VLANs • IP-based VLANs • Uses the network layer address to form the VLANs • Compared to Layer-2: • Reduce the time spent reconfiguring the network • A bit slower at processing each message • Advantage: • Can manually input/change IP addresses • NO configuration is needed

  13. Multi-Switch VLAN

  14. Multi-Switch VLAN cont. • Works the same way as a Single-Switch VLAN, except: • Several switches are used Advantage: • Incresed performance • Increased security option

  15. Benefit of VLANs • The key benefit of VLANs is that they permit the network administrator to organize the LAN logically instead of physically.

  16. Why use VLAN’s.? • Performance • Formation of virtual workgroups • Simplified administration • Reduced cost • Security

  17. Disadvantages • 1. Communication Problem • 2.Complexity • 3.Capacity • 4.Infection

  18. Conclusion • Reduce the cost of dealing with moves and changes • For organizations, • seen as an added benefit

  19. You’ve got ? minutes to ask… Any Question?

  20. THANK YOU………………..
