  1. Kakadu National Park Local vs. Introduced Species By: Ashneel Kumar

  2. Background Info On Kakadu • . Kakadu National Park is in the Northern of Australia. • . Kakadu National Park is located within the Brilliant rivers of the region of the Northern Territory of Australia. • . It covers an area of 19,804 km, extending nearly 200 kilometre from north to south and over 100 kilometres from east to west. It is one third the size of Tasmania.

  3. Analysis on introduced species • One of the big affecters at Kakadu are the Asian Water Buffalo. Asian Water Buffalo were introduced into northern Australian settlements between the 1820’s and the 1840’s. As these settlements were abandoned, the buffalo were released and quickly spread across the lowlands of the Alligator Rivers region. Other animals include feral pigs, cats, dogs, horses and Cane toads.

  4. Native flora and fauna • Flora • Barringtonia actuangula ( Fresh Water Mangrove plant). A small, spreading tree that grows on the banks of freshwater creeks, rivers and swamps. People call it the itchy tree: small caterpillars feed on the leaves during the wet season and localised skin irritation if touched. Basically Kakadu has many plants that have adapted to for a long time and plants that animals have avoided if introduced species come they can eat there plants and the colony will die out. • Fauna • The Gouldian Finch also known as the Lady Gouldian Finch, Gould's Finch or the Rainbow Finch, is a colourful bird to Australia. There is strong evidence of a continuing decline, even at the best-known site near Katherine in the Northern Territory. Large numbers are bred in captivity, particularly in Australia.

  5. Changes made by introduced species • Asian Water Buffalo cause pain in a number of ways so as pigs horses and etc. Their enormous size, weight and impenetrable hooves compact the soil and make plants die, causing erosion. Their habit of wallowing erodes river banks and muddies the water, making it unsuitable for many aquatic plants and animals. They eat a lot of grass and other plants, trying to compete with other animals.

  6. Possible Outcomes • . Kill out introduced species • . High security on people • . Poison
