  1. Nova Scotia Community Access Program Terence Bay C@P – An Evolution

  2. Prospect Communities Located just outside Halifax NS and spanning along the road to Peggy’s Cove, the “Prospect Communities” is home to over 4,000 people. A unique mix of Small fishing villages, modern suburb developments and bedroom communities.

  3. Terence Bay and Area C@P • The Terence Bay and Area C@P Site was established in 1998 by a small group of volunteers. The goal was to: • Provide access to the Internet and Technology • Empower residents to participate in online learning. • To build partnerships with other community organizations.

  4. … Transition to the ROC In 2002 the C@P Site transformed into the Resource Opportunities Centre, a Community Development Association Serving thirteen communities. The connection with C@P continued. From here, the organization started pursuing community development based projects and long-term planning.

  5. Active in the Community • By seeking out funding and partnering with other organizations, the ROC was able to deliver a wide variety of community based activities. Including: • Technology workshops. • Outreach computer support. • Community Newsletter. • Web portal. • Golf tournaments. • Community festivals. • Wine tasting. • Youth cooking classes. • Programs for Seniors. • Just to name a few…

  6. Digital Histories To explore, collect, and digitize the personal and community histories of the area The end product was a Digital Heritage website and CD-ROM.

  7. Through three year project funding the ROC designed and built www.prospectcommunities.com, which it continues to maintain and expand to this day. • Based on the Open-Source platform Joomla! the site serves as a central community news and information site. • Residents can: • Add news and blog posts. • Add events to our calendar. • Create and manage business directory entries. • Post small notices. • Share photos.

  8. Using Technology to Connect

  9. And the Winner is! In 2007 the ROC won the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award for ‘Innovation in Community Development.’

  10. Kitchen Conversations Based on the principles of “World Cafè” the Kitchen conversation series was a project designed to make the gatherings fun and welcoming, in an attempt to break the traditional mold of community meetings and to let everyone have their voice heard.

  11. Kitchen Conversations Among the many predominate themes that residents brought forward during kitchen conversations was the need for a common, multi-purpose community centre…. ‘A Place for Everybody. ‘

  12. Prospect Road Community Centre From 2005 to 2010 the Steering Committee worked tirelessly in partnership with community and the Municipality to conduct a Needs Assessment, select the site, hire an Architect, oversee the design and construction of the building, and recruit a Volunteer Management Board to oversee the operation and programming.
