  2. Imagine that you are seated beside each of these people on an airplane. What do you imagine you will see or hear in conversation from them? • Farmer • Senior Citizen • Construction Worker • Professional Athlete • Teacher

  3. Why do we share many of the same mental pictures of these people? • We may share similar stereotypes.

  4. What is a stereotype • A stereotype is a fixed mental picture of the way members of a group think or behave.

  5. What things mightbe the subject of stereotypes? • Country • Religions • Race • Age • Appearance • Occupation

  6. Why should we avoid using stereotypes? • Stereotypes ignore a person’s individuality! • These attitudes keep you from seeing the real world!

  7. How can you spot a stereotype? 1. Does the statement include an exaggeration? 2. Does the statement include the words none, always, all or never? 3. Are the statement’s adjectives strong? lazy, sneaky, cruel, stupid, awesome 4. Is the statement’s tone reflecting absolute good or bad feeling?

  8. Let’s Apply the Skill…Spot the stereotypes! • 1. Chinese civilization is more than 4,000 years old. • 2. About 30 percent of China’s population live in cities. • 3. The Chinese are excellent gymnasts and musicians. • 4. AllChinese students work and study much harder than American students.

  9. Let’s look at more statements… • 5. Taiwanese people excel at computers and understanding new technology. • 6. The Chinese have a higher rate of literacy than Mongolians. • 7. Chinese children are always well behaved and respectful of their elders. • 8. Many Mongolians raise and ride horses. • 9. Mongolia is more than twice the size of Texas. • 10. Chinese are great cooks and own restaurants.
