Introduction • As Jesus our Lord was on the cross, His “last words” teach us many lessons • In this series I hope to share with you some insight into those final moments before Jesus took His last breath and died. • In our last lessons we studied, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”

  6. “I am thirsty” • Jesus could do a miracle, but just as He refused to turn stones into bread in temptation, He refused to create water in His suffering on the cross • As God He could say, “…before Abraham was born, I am!”(John 8:58) and as a man He was saying, “I am thirsty” (John 19:28) • As God and man, Jesus was able to become thirsty (John 4:5-7)

  7. “I am thirsty” • His thirst seems to have been more than a parched mouth (See Prov. 17:22) • The psalmist described well the longing of one who desires God’s fellowship (Psalm 42:1-3) • In Psalm 22:14-15, the agony of Jesus is depicted in this language [poured out like water…heart melted within me…strength dried up… tongue cleaves to jaw… in dust])

  8. “I am thirsty” • Jesus was thirsty so that He might redeem us from an eternal thirst (See Luke 16:24; Rev. 7:13-17) • Another reason for His thirst was to fulfill another OT prophecy (Psalm 69:21; John 19:28) • And as God had given the prophecy it was fulfilled and the soldiers gave Jesus vinegar (sour wine)(John 19:29-30)

  9. “I am thirsty” • What would you have given Jesus to drink? • Perhaps the better question is, what do you give Jesus to drink when He is thirsty? (Matt. 25:34-35) • Do we have a spiritual thirst for God and His service like the Lord Jesus Christ? Are we willing to suffer unmet needs for the Father? (Rom. 15:2-3)

  10. “I am thirsty” • Many people often wonder if God knows the pain we experience • At the cross all doubt is removed and we know that He has felt and continues to feel our pain (Heb. 4:15-16) -In physical pain? Suffering cross! -Humiliated? Spat upon and mocked! -In darkness? So was He! -Forsaken? He died alone! (See Heb. 2:10)

  11. “I am thirsty” • All of us are born with thirst (ask a mother) but not just physical… spiritual thirst • Some attempt to quench their thirst with other things [sex, money, alcohol, food, power, drugs, medication etc.] • God says these broken cisterns will never hold water (Jer. 2:13) We must return to the spring of living water.

  12. “I am thirsty” • When Jesus said, “I am thirsty”, and then suffered the pain of death, He released us from that suffering • Jesus suffered parched lips so that we could drink from the wells of salvation (John 4:13-14; 7:37-38) • Jesus was offered 3 cups and only one did He drink fully for our salvation (Mt. 27:33-34; Jn. 19:29-30; Mt. 26:39; John 18:11)

  13. “I am thirsty” • Jesus wanted to drink the cup of God’s wrath and fill the cup with salvation • Jesus accepted no sedatives on the cross, but rather took the full strength of God’s punishment upon Himself • It is no wonder that the last invitation in the Bible reads, “Whoever is thirsty, let him come; let him take the free gift of the water of life” (Rev. 22:17)

  14. Application • If you will come to the one who was thirsty for you, you will never thirst again! • Do you truly appreciate what Jesus did in drinking the cup of God’s wrath, so that you could be free from the penalty of sin? • If you are found thirsty in the day of judgment it will be your own fault (Luke 16:19-31)

  15. Come and take of the water of life…freely • Hear (John 12:48) • Believe(John 8:24) • Repent(Luke 13:3, 5) • Confess(Matt. 10:32-33) • Baptized(Mark 16:16) • Faithful(Rev. 2:10)
