Enhancing Rock Saw Performance: Redesign of Driving Teeth by Blue Diamond Machinery Team

The Blue Diamond Machinery team, comprising Kelly Hogue, Kristen Tucker, Matthew Gassen, and Buck Melton, undertook a project to improve the cutting performance of a rock saw for CONEQTEC Universal. By focusing on increasing the cutting depth, enhancing gear tooth longevity, and preventing hydraulic motor malfunctions, the team proposed innovative redesign solutions. Key changes included optimizing gear mesh, employing advanced surface treatments, and implementing protective gear guards. The project aims to extend the gear teeth's useful life beyond 100 hours, thereby enhancing overall efficiency in demanding environments.

  1. Blue Diamond Machinery Redesign of Driving Teeth to Improve Performance by Team Members: Kelly Hogue Kristen Tucker Matthew Gassen Buck Melton Prepared for CONEQTEC Universal and BAE 4012

  2. Mission statement • Blue Diamond Machinery strives to improve products by implementing high quality designs, increasing efficiency, and surpassing the demands of our clients.

  3. Project sponsor • CONEQTEC Universal • Manufacturer of skid steer attachments • President Gary Cochran

  4. Minimal cutting depth To increase depth of cut, the diameter of the blade must increase, therefore, increasing the weight of the attachment. Production Model Provided by CONEQTEC

  5. Problem Statement • Increase cutting depth to greater than blade radius • Improve prototype to increase useful life • Prohibit hydraulic motor from descending into debris piles

  6. Features of prototype • Depth of cut is close to blade diameter • 18 inches deep. 2.5 inches wide • Powered by hi-flow hydraulic system • 40 hp input to hydraulic motors • Laterally adjustable • CONEQTEC patented design

  7. Rock Saw Prototype Provided by Coneqtec

  8. Statement of Work • Increase useful life of gear teeth from less than 50 hrs to over 100 hrs.

  9. Statement of Work (cont’d) • Prevent hydraulic motors from descending into debris

  10. Statement of Work The longevity problem of the rock saw is due to wear on the gear teeth attached to the saw blade. Options: • Redesign gear mesh • Increase wearability of gear teeth

  11. Statement of Work (cont’d) Test for increase in wearability of gear teeth after instituting • Surface treatments • Surface coatings • Harder material

  12. Statement of work (cont’d) Prevent hydraulic motors from descending into debris • Install a ski guard on motors • Install a stop on depth control

  13. Research • Patents • Rim driven • Cutting (Concrete) • Literature • Track Trenchers • Rock Saws • Surface Treatments • Surface Coatings • Gear configurations

  14. Research (cont’d) • CONEQTEC Patents • Slot cutter depth control • Auxiliary implements attachments

  15. Possible Solutions Increase useful life of gear teeth • Change gear tooth material • Increase tolerance of gear mesh • Surface treatments • Surface coatings

  16. Prototype Ring Gear Teeth

  17. Prototype Gear Mesh

  18. Possible Solutions (cont’d) Institute Alternative Design • New gears mesh into blade eliminating current ring teeth wear

  19. Alternative Design Cont. • Gear guards are installed on blade to protect blade from gear mesh wear

  20. Alternative Gear Mesh Design

  21. Proposed Budget

  22. Project Schedule • Fall Semester • Patent Search • Design Concepts • Spring Semester • Fabrication • Testing • Final Design

  23. Thank You • Gary Cochran and CONEQTEC • Dr. Paul Weckler • Jana Moore • BAE Lab

  24. At this time we would like to open the floor to any QUESTIONS?
