Core Competency #5 Constructed by A. Reid Murphy Advance human rights and social and economic justice
Each person, regardless of position in society, has basic human rights, such as freedom, safety, privacy, an adequate standard of living, health care, and education. Social workers recognize the global interconnections of oppression and are knowledgeable about theories of justice and strategies to promote human and civil rights. Social work incorporates social justice practices in organizations, institutions, and society to ensure that basic human rights are distributed equitably and without prejudice.
Generalist Practice Behavior 5.1 Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination Since the practice of oppression and discrimination are as much a part of our nation’s history as liberty and justice are, I shall conduct my own research in order to obtain the greatest understanding of how these suffocating practices affect the progression and growth of our client’s in society today.
Generalist Practice Behavior 5.2 Advocate for human rights and social and economic justice Every citizen has the right to social welfare, which includes a standard of adequate living for themselves and their families. Anytime these standards are compromised, it is the duty of a social worker to advocate for that individual to ensure equal access to the necessary resources.
Generalist Practice Behavior 5.3 Engage in practices that advance social and economic justice I am currently on the committee for the Homeless and Hunger Stand Down event. As a member of this team, I am currently engaged in seeking social justice for this particular population through various forms of promoting public awareness, which includes radio promotion, sponsorship, and tolerance through education.
