  1. Psychosocial Interventions - Paediatric Psychology Children and Young People’s Health support Group Wednesday 1st May 2013

Background The Scottish Government Health Directorate (SGHD) in the policy document ‘Better Health, Better Care: National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People’s Specialist Services in Scotland’ (SGHD, 2008) charged NHS Education for Scotland (NES) with building psychological capacity and capability in Scottish Paediatric Healthcare. As such, the development, delivery and evaluation of an educational programme on Psychosocial Interventions to improve Adherence, Self-Management and Adjustment to Physical Health Conditions for Children and Young People was commissioned. Continued funding and support from the Child and Maternal Health Division.

  3. BackgroundPolicy Drivers • Better Health, Better Care: National Delivery Plan for Children and Young People’s Specialist Services in Scotland. (SGHD, 2009). • The Healthcare Quality Strategy for NHSScotland. (SGHD 2010). • Improving Health and Wellbeing of People with Long Term Conditions in Scotland: A National Action Plan. (SGHD 2009). • Getting it Right for Every Child. (SGHD 2008). • Mental Health of Children and Young People: A Framework for Promotion, Prevention & Care.(2005). • Delivering a Healthy Future: An Action Framework for Children and Young People’s Mental Health in Scotland. (2007).

  4. Educational Resource Published • The development of an educational resource ‘Psychosocial Interventions for Improving Adherence, Self-Management and adjustment to physical Health conditions – Children and Young people’. This resource is available on the Children and Young people’s services Managed Knowledge network (C&YP MKN) and at health board libraries. • It is an interactive learning tool aimed at enhancing competency and confidence on the psychosocial dimension of care.

  5. National Training • National skills based training delivered annually. • 2010 – 2011 - Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Stirling and Glasgow • 2011 – 2012 - Dundee, Stornaway, Dumfries and Inverness • 2012 – 2013 - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and Aberdeen • 150 training places allocated per annum.

  6. Local Training Training for trainers – to deliver training which is responsive to local educational needs. Delivery of local skills based training to multidisciplinary paediatric staff. Development of a local infrastructure to ensure: Training is applied in practice Monitor Impact/Evaluate Maintenance of skills (refresher training
