Essential Vocabulary Selection: A Teacher's Guide to Prioritizing Words and Phrases

Determining essential vocabulary is crucial for effective teaching. Educators should analyze various resources such as GPS, PICASSO, and high-frequency word lists, in addition to textbooks and reading materials. Key questions to consider include which words enhance text comprehension, the students' prior knowledge, and the significance of concepts for pre-teaching. Additionally, teachers should evaluate words' frequency, context clues, opportunities for grouping, and strategies for fostering meaningful use. Such strategies will help integrate vocabulary into students' lives and make learning enjoyable and effective.
