  2. Formed in 1945 • 50 nations meet in San Francisco • Included all powerful nations, • Headquarters would be in New York City

  3. Committed to: • World peace and security • Economic development • Human rights • Mandate: (mission) to settle international disputes

  4. Two main bodies of the UN

  5. General Assembly • All UN nations are members • 1 country=1 vote • Allows members to discuss issues and international laws in the open • Advisory capacity, no real power here

  6. Security Council • Settles any arguments, controls peacekeeping • Determines when armed forces will be sent into a country (the Blue Berets) • 15 member nations on this council • 10 members for 2 year terms • 5 members are permanent • Votes pass=9/15, 5 votes must be the permanent members

  7. Permanent members of Security Council are: • USA • Russia • Britain • France • China • Each has veto power—the power to cancel any action brought forth or planned

  8. UN Institutions created to improve world conditions • World Health Organization—WHO • UNICEF • Food and Agriculture Organization—FAO • International Monetary Fund—IMF • International Court of Justice—brings member states and individuals to trial

Other UN Trust Funds8 • 2 UNRWA and UNIDIR report only to the GA. • 4 In an exceptional arrangement, the Under-Secretary-General for Field Support reports directly to the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations. 5 IAEA reports to the Security Council and the General Assembly (GA). 6 The CTBTO Prep.Com and OPCW report to the GA. 7 Specialized agencies are autonomous organizations working with the UN and each other through the coordinating machinery of the ECOSOC at the • intergovernmental level, and through the Chief Executives Board for coordination (CEB) at the inter-secretariat level. • 8 UNFIP is an autonomous trust fund operating under the leadership of the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General. UNDEF’s advisory board recommends funding proposals for approval by the Secretary-General.
