Strategic Intelligence for Research and Society: Insights from the RCN Meeting

The RCN meeting held on October 26-27 at Risø National Laboratory focused on the need for foresight and strategic intelligence in addressing contemporary research policy challenges. Discussions spanned biotechnology, IKT, and the increasing complexity of technology in society. A major theme was the crucial need for open dialogue and transdisciplinary strategies to bridge the gap between research and societal understanding. Proposed actions include initiating debates on synthesis reports and emphasizing citizen engagement in research.

The way forward • Launch a debate in RCN about the synthesis report based on the 5 foresight studies • What type of consequences for funding mechanisms, evaluation, recruitment, management, culture etc. • Next phase: widening the perspective • Focus shift from technologies to other themes • Work on an European level • Nordic, ForSociety, EU/IPTS • Elaborate on dialogue based methods on a smaller scale: pilot projects within RCN • Stimulate/finance other research organisations to use foresight methods
