Rewriting Formulas

This guide teaches you how to rewrite formulas by solving for variables in equations with multiple terms. Learn to isolate the desired variable by eliminating other terms and coefficients through addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We'll provide practical examples such as finding the radius from circumference, width from perimeter, and height from area. Practice problems included to strengthen your skills. Effective strategies help you tackle equations with parentheses and multiple instances of variables for efficient problem-solving.

  1. Rewriting Formulas • Formula: An equation with more than 1 different variable. • Solve for a variable: Get that letter (variable) alone.

  2. Solving for a variable • Eliminate terms (add or subtract to each side) • Eliminate coefficient (÷ or mult. by recip.) • If a letter is in a ( ), get the ( ) alone first, then remove ( ) and continue • If there is more than 1 of desired letter in 2 terms, get the 2 terms together on same side and eliminate the rest, then reverse distribute (factor) and ÷ to get rid of ( ).

  3. Examples • 1. C= 2πr solve for r. What is r if C = 44 in.? • 2. P = 2l + 2w solve for w. What is w if l=12m and P= 41m.

  4. More practice • 3. A = ½ bh Solve for h. • 4. 9x – 4y = 7 Solve for y. What is y if x is -5?

  5. More practice continued • 2y = 6 – xy Solve for y. What is y if x= -3?
