  1. Suicide KIMBERLY BUCK I am part of the suicide prevention program in Ogden.

  2. Facts Women attempt suicide three times as much as men. A woman takes her own life every 90 minutes in the U.S., but it is estimated that one woman attempts suicide every 78 seconds. Although women attempt suicide more often, men complete suicide at a rate four times that of women. Firearms are now the leading method of suicide in women, as well as men.

  3. Facts More than 32,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year. Alcoholism is a factor in about 30 percent of all completed suicides. Firearms are used in more suicides than homicides. Over 60 percent of all people who die by suicide suffer from major depression.

  4. Risk Factors Psychiatric Disorders-At least 90 percent of people who kill themselves have a diagnosable and treatable psychiatric illness such as major depression, bipolar depression, schizophrenia, alcohol or drug abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder, or some other anxiety disorder. Past history of attempted suicide-Between 20 and 50 percent of people who kill themselves had previously attempted suicide.

  5. Risk Factors Genetic predisposition-Family history of suicide, suicide attempts, depression or other psychiatric illness. Neurotransmitters-A clear relationship has been demonstrated between low concentrations of the serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleactic acid in cerebrospinal fluid and an increased incidence of attempted and completed suicide in psychiatric patients.

  6. Risk Factors Impulsivity-Impulsive individuals are more apt to act on suicidal impulses. Demographics-Males are three to five times more likely to commit suicide than females. Elderly Caucasian males have the highest suicide rates.

  7. Warning Signs Observable signs of serious depression: Unrelenting low mood, pessimism, hopelessness, desperation, anxiety, psychic pain and inner tension, withdrawal, sleep problems. Increased alcohol and/or other drug use. Recent impulsiveness and taking unnecessary risks. Threatening suicide or expressing a strong wish to die.
