Characterisation of Dr Jekyll Dr Jekyll is a tall, well-made and smooth faced man whom is around 50 years old and is a very kind gentlemen. Jekyll lives a comfortable wealthy life, as he is well educated and is a doctor . He reads about religion, he does charity work and throws bachelor parties for his friends and the purpose of these parties is to talk about literature, science and religion as Dr Jekyll does experiments in his laboratory. But Dr. Jekyll does have one nasty little secret: he longs to be evil and give way to many horrible powers. It’s important to note that Dr. Jekyll has a conscience.
In addition Dr Jekyll knows where Mr Hyde is when he is being looked for after the incident of the trampling of the girl. He knows what he’s doing is bad. He even admits that as Dr. Jekyll, he sometimes works to fix the problems caused by Mr. Hyde. But eventually, he just can’t help himself. He has to participate in a world of pleasure no matter what it costs him, as Mr Hyde is to strong and powerful for Mr Hyde so Dr Jekyll has to kill himself to end all this evilness.Dr Jekyll's name in french is Je- Kyll which in English translates to be I kill.
Characterisation of Mr Hyde Mr Edward Hyde is smaller and younger than Dr Jekyll. Although no one can pinpoint a deformity- they all agree he has one as he is so small and one that makes him a twisted and evil man. Mr Hyde appears to have frightening eyes and a strange face which suggests the possibilities of evilness. Mr Hyde likes to use violence, but never in front of crowds of people. Hyde is compared to an animal through the novella "hissing intake".
This is how Mr Hyde gains his pleasure and is a very arrogant man. In the story of the door Mr Hyde calmly tramples over a young girl aged eight to ten years old, and shows no emotions or sympathy for the girl, leaving her screaming on the ground. Mr Enfield says "it wasn't like a man; it was like some damned Juggernaut." For most of the story Mr Hyde is a hidden man and a persona Dr Jekyll hides behind. Mr Utterson notes the significance of the name in chapter 2- the search for Mr Hyde, "if he be Mr Hyde, I shall be Mr Seek". He always sneaks in the back door to his house in Soho, he is very sneaky.
Mr Utterson Mr Utterson is a tall, lean man who has a serious looking face, lean,long,dusty,dreary and yet somehow loveable" (chapter1). He is a lawyer "was a man of a rugged countance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold scanty and embarrassed in discourse" (chapter 1).However Mr Utterson is said to never usually smile but has kind warm eyes towards others. Mr Utterson is very loyal and trustworthy with secrets and lets his friends go there own ways and even if they do wrong things he will be there for them . He guards his friends even when he suspects his friend Jekyll of criminal activities such as blackmailing he prefers to believe what he has learnt rather than bring it upon his good friend. He reads "dry divinity" and goes to bed no later than midnight.
Structure The structure is based around the good and evil and how they are one. It starts off with a strange relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde which Mr. Utterson narrates. More and more things were revealed, especially in Dr. Lanyons narrative. Then at the end in chapter 10 all is revealed when Dr. Jekyll tells his side of the story.
