  4. SAFELY USING TOOLS Having children prepared to use tools in appropriate ways can help to prevent injury. Teaching a child to use tools safely allows them to feel independent and competent which can produce competencies and confidence in other areas. There are many safety knives and scissors on the market. Allowing children to use knives and scissors will support coordination and strengthen hand muscles as well as assisting in depth perception.   5. HOW TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT SAFELY USING TOOLS Describe what you will be doing and give a safety briefing first. Explain how fingers, hair or clothes can get caught in mechanical tools or can be cut by sharp tools. Also explain ways that the tool can be dangerous, such as attempting to cut something other than paper (at first), or drilling something that should not be drilled. Explain what will happen if they do not comply with the safety requirements. Always show children what kind of safety gear should be used with each tool.
