The integumentary system is primarily represented by the skin, the largest organ in the human body. It serves several vital functions: protection against external harm, sensory perception, and waste elimination. The skin comprises three main layers: the epidermis, which includes dead, keratin-filled cells for UV protection; the dermis, containing sensory neurons, blood vessels, and glands; and a layer of fat cells for insulation. Additionally, hair and nails, made of proteins, protect the body and grow throughout life, while exocrine glands, such as sweat and oil glands, play essential roles in skin health.
